Referee Development and Support Sessions

Ollie Williams
Upcoming sessions for match officials

We are delighted to confirm a number of support and development sessions for our match officials in the coming weeks.

The Referee Development Team has organised a series of free, online sessions for our referee workforce as we continue to deal with the challenges of the pandemic and look forward to the return of football. All match officials have been sent details of the sessions including the booking process.

DEALING WITH PARENTS, MANAGERS AND COACHES

WEDNESDAY 24 MARCH AT 7PM

We are pleased to have Farai Hallam, National Referee Manager at The Football Association, delivering a presentation to match officials. Farai will go through updates from the FA and then kick-off with a Laws of the Game quiz. We will then look into some of the challenging situations we may face during matches from parents, managers or coaches and there will be an opportunity for referees to give some examples of any off-field challenges they have faced whilst refereeing. Farai will then show some video clips and discuss key tips to take away and into matches.

THE 5 CLIP CHALLENGE

MONDAY 29 MARCH AT 7PM

Two of our EFL match officials and FA Tutors, Marvyn Amphlett and Ollie Williams, will ask for your views on video clips. After signing up, referees will be sent 5 video clips before the session. Referees will need to make a few brief notes on a) what their own decision/thought process would be, b) what the referee in the clip did well and c) what could be done better next time? Marvyn and Ollie will then facilitate a discussion between those in attendance and what is considered to be best practice.

REFEREEING A RESTART

THURSDAY 1 APRIL AND MONDAY 5 APRIL AT 7PM

We have lined up a number of speakers to take match officials through the restart of football, including: Latest FA and government updates, what we already know about the restart, what challenges we could face, communication and management techniques and your welfare as a referee. Speakers include: Nichola Trigg (WFA CEO), Ollie Williams (WFA RDM), Dan Pattison (Level 3 and FA Tutor), Paul Field (The Referees’ Association) and John Roskelly (WFA Referees’ Committee Chair).
